Although manual patch clamping and automated patch clamping using the QPatch systems generate data with the same high quality, the preparation procedures of the target cells remain very different. While the experimenter in manual patch clamp experiments often has a reporting system for selecting highly expressing cells, the automated system tests cells randomly.

The implications are very significant: for automated patch clamp careful cell culture routines must be implemented to yield a uniform cell line with a near perfect and stable expression profile over the entire cell population for as many passages as possible.
