Sophion announces large expansion in China

Ballerup, Denmark (May 19, 2008). Sophion Bioscience A/S (Ballerup, Denmark) announced today a large expansion into China with the appointment of an exclusive distributor and the placement of two QPatch automated patch clamp systems at leading Chinese contract research organizations.

The company DL Instruments, Inc. (California, USA) has been appointed exclusive distributor for Sophion’s QPatch automated patch clamp in China. DL Instruments specializes in distribution and support of electrophysiological and biological research instrumentation and software in China. The company represents a wide range of quality products manufactured by leading companies in the life science field. With a dominant position in the market for traditional patch clamp systems, DL Instruments has a sales and support team that includes some of China’s leading electrophysiologists. DL Instruments presently has offices in Beijing, Wuhan, Guangzhou and Shanghai.

“We are very enthusiastic about the collaboration with Sophion”, noted DL Instruments’ CEO, Prof. Anruo Zou, “there is a great opportunity in China for the QPatch 16 and QPatch HT automated patch clamp systems. Sophion’s emphasis on customer support uniquely matches DL Instruments’ strategy and capability”.

As a consequence of Sophion’s focus on the Chinese market the company has received orders of QPatch automated patch clamp systems from two Shanghai-based contract research organizations. These two QPatch systems are the first automated patch clamp systems placed in the Chinese pharmaceutical industry. Both companies offer the global pharmaceutical industry a broad and integrated portfolio of laboratory and research manufacturing services. The acquisition of the QPatch technology will enable the companies to expand their services into the rapidly increasing fields of cardiac safety testing and ion channel drug discovery.

“We have a headstart in China with the appointment of a very professional and skilled distributor” says Frank Henrichsen, Vice President Sales and Marketing in Sophion, and continues “we believe that the strong distributor and the large exposure of the QPatch technology by two leading CROs will fuel a further expansion of the QPatch technology in the rapidly growing Chinese pharmaceutical market”.

About Sophion Bioscience A/S
Sophion Bioscience A/S was founded in July 2000, emerging from a successful research and development program at NeuroSearch. Sophion’s sole focus is to provide advanced products and integrated solutions for automated patch clamping. Sophion’s first product was the QPatch 16, an automated patch clamp system that provides high-quality patch clamp data on a truly industrial basis. The QPatch HT is a 48-channel gigaseal patch clamp system that can be applied to both voltage-gated and ligand-gated ion channels. The system includes 48 individual low-noise patch clamp amplifiers and pressure controllers. Only the QPatch has integrated cell preparation and QPlate exchange facilities enabling several hours of unattended operation. The unique microfluidic flow channel system implemented in the QPlates enables fast liquid exchange around each cell and provides the option to test multiple compounds or increasing concentrations on the same cell.
